Staying connected in France
Many trips to France start in Paris and go on to Lyon, Provence or the Riviera. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which France plan to choose
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and tickets take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, which suits remote work and long stays. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Orange, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile
France has four mobile network operators: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile. AirOva plans run on Orange, Bouygues and Free Mobile; SFR is not on our plans. Arriving at Charles de Gaulle, Orly or Nice
Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), the busiest airport in the EU, is 23 km northeast of central Paris, and Orly (ORY) is 13 km south of the city. Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE), France's third-busiest airport, lies 5.9 km southwest of Nice. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
The Métro, the TGV and EU roaming
In June 2020 the RATP said 4G covered its Paris network, in stations and in tunnels, for customers of all four operators. Trains are patchier: in Arcep's 2025 survey, web pages loaded in under five seconds in 64% of tests on TGV lines, against 93% on metros. France is in the EU, so SIMs from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine roam there under Roam Like at Home; for other SIMs, including British ones, roaming depends on the operator. Tip: save TGV tickets offline before you board. Monaco is a separate country outside the EU, so if you are staying there, check that your plan covers it. Keep the home SIM in the phone for bank codes, with its roaming off unless it is from the EU.
