Staying connected in Italy

Coverage: cities, coast, mountains and islands

Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice are densely covered, often with 5G in the centre, though thick stone walls in palazzi and churches weaken signal indoors and the metros can drop between stations. The Amalfi towns are covered, but the cliff blocks signal on stretches of the SS163 coast road, and the Cinque Terre train runs largely in tunnels. In the Dolomites, valley towns such as Cortina d’Ampezzo and the main lifts have signal; high trails, passes and many rifugi do not. The interiors of Sicily and Sardinia are thinner and long ferry crossings lose signal mid-sea.

Arriving at Fiumicino, Malpensa, Venice or Naples

After landing at Rome Fiumicino (FCO), Milan Malpensa (MXP), Venice Marco Polo (VCE) or Naples (NAP), turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Apps and local rules worth knowing

Trenitalia and Italo for high-speed trains; Free Now or itTaxi for licensed taxis, since Uber is mostly limited to its premium service in a few cities; WhatsApp for hotels, B&Bs and restaurants. Book timed tickets for the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Uffizi ahead and keep the QR codes offline, and if you drive, use a maps app that shows the ZTL zones in historic centres. One more Italy tip: the networks are strong where people live and thinner on the cliffs, peaks and open sea that make the scenery. Before an Amalfi drive, a Dolomites hike or a ferry to Sardinia, save offline maps and screenshot your tickets, and budget data for photos rather than browsing. Keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes, and you’ll leave Fiumicino or Malpensa with the train into town already booked.
