Staying connected in Vietnam

The quickest way to get online in Vietnam is to install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land in Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City. Which Vietnam plan to choose

GB plans suit most trips. For a week, about 5–7 GB covers a typical traveller on Grab, maps and messaging; a city break in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City runs on 3–5 GB, and riders with navigation on all day, or anyone video-calling daily, should plan on 10 GB or more. Coverage from north to south

Hanoi's Old Quarter and West Lake, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue and the coastal road between them are well covered, and Ho Chi Minh City has dense coverage with 5G in the central districts. Phu Quoc is covered around the main towns and beaches, the Mekong Delta in Can Tho and the larger towns. Gaps are predictable: the high passes of the Ha Giang loop, the trekking valleys below Sapa, Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay among the karsts, the caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang and the smaller Mekong back channels. Arriving at Noi Bai, Da Nang or Tan Son Nhat

At Noi Bai (HAN) and Tan Son Nhat (SGN), the SIM desks queue and register local SIMs against your passport. With the eSIM installed at home, turn off airplane mode after landing, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Apps worth setting up before you go

Grab is the default for car and motorbike rides and food delivery, so add a payment method at home. Zalo is the messenger that guesthouses, tour operators and motorbike rental shops prefer to email; sign-up usually needs an SMS code, so create the account while your home number is easy to use. One more Vietnam tip: plan the offline stretches instead of hoping for signal. Screenshot hotel addresses, train tickets and tour vouchers, download entertainment before overnight trains and sleeper buses, and treat bay cruises as offline time.
