Staying connected in Turkey

Which Turkey plan to choose
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, ride apps, messaging and tour bookings take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom
Turkey has three mobile operators: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. Türk Telekom’s mobile network traded as Avea until 2016, so a plan card that shows Avea means Türk Telekom. 5G is new here: the three operators switched it on together in all 81 provincial centres and have until April 2028 to cover the rest of the country, so outside the cities expect 4G.
Arriving in Istanbul, Antalya or Cappadocia
Istanbul has two airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, about 32 km from the centre. Antalya (AYT) is 13 km from the city, and Cappadocia is served by Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) and Kayseri (ASR). After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
IMEI rules and long stays
Turkey registers phones brought in from abroad by their IMEI, and an unregistered phone is cut off from Turkish networks 120 days after entry. A holiday on a roaming travel eSIM is not affected. Before a stay of three months or more, check the current rules: a 2019 operator notice warned that phones roaming for 91 days or more within 120 days can be blocked.
Tip: install and test the eSIM the night before a Cappadocia balloon flight, since flights leave around sunrise and cave-hotel Wi-Fi can be weak. Download offline maps too: signal fades deep in the Grand Bazaar, on narrow Cappadocia valley floors and in the underground cities. Keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes, with its roaming off.
