Argentina is a country of long distances, from Buenos Aires to the glaciers of Patagonia. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Personal, Movistar and Claro

Argentina has three national mobile networks: Personal, Claro and Movistar. Telecom Argentina, which runs Personal, bought Movistar's Argentine business in February 2025, and the Movistar name is being phased out, so the network name on your phone may change. Commercial 5G is live in big cities such as Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario and Mendoza, but 4G still carries most traffic.

Arriving at EZE or AEP

Most international flights land at Ezeiza (EZE), 22 km south-south-west of Buenos Aires. Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP), about 2 km from downtown, serves domestic and regional flights. For Patagonia, El Calafate airport (FTE), 21 km east of the town, is the main gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.

Patagonia, Iguazú and the borders

Patagonia's Ruta 40 has long empty stretches without signal, and El Chaltén had only 2G until Claro switched on 3G and 4G there in December 2022. Iguazú Falls straddles the border with Brazil. Ferries from Buenos Aires reach Colonia in Uruguay in about 1.5 hours, and the Los Libertadores pass to Santiago in Chile can close in winter. Before you cross, check whether your plan covers the next country.

Tip: download offline maps for the whole Patagonian route, not just the next town. In Buenos Aires, thieves can snatch a phone while you use it on the street, so step into a shop or café to check the map, and keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its roaming off.
