Install a travel eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land in Bogotá, Medellín or Cartagena. AirOva sells Colombia plans from $2.99, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no calls, SMS or local phone number. GB plans run on Claro and unlimited plans on Movistar; each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and ride apps take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days, which suits long stays, remote work and video calls home. Each plan card names its network. More in our Colombia eSIM guide.
Colombia's mobile market is now led by two groups, Claro and Tigo. Millicom, the company behind Tigo, has bought Movistar Colombia, and the Movistar brand is being retired in favour of Tigo, so you may see the Tigo name on your phone where the plan card says Movistar. 5G was switched on in February 2024; each plan card shows whether a plan is listed as 5G.
El Dorado (BOG) in Bogotá is Colombia's busiest airport. José María Córdova (MDE) lies in Rionegro, about 20 km south-east of Medellín, and Rafael Núñez (CTG) sits in northern Cartagena. UK travel advice says not to hail taxis on the street but to book licensed taxis by phone or app, so land with data. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Phones brought in by travellers must be registered by IMEI to work on a Colombian SIM, but phones on international roaming, which is how a travel eSIM connects, are exempt. Overland, the main road crossing to Ecuador is the Rumichaca Bridge near Ipiales; there is no road across the Darién Gap to Panama. Before you cross, check on the plan card whether your plan covers the next country.
Tip: download offline maps before trips to the Amazon, national parks or multi-day treks, where the signal often disappears. Keep your phone out of sight on buses and busy streets, and keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes with its roaming off.
No SIM shops, no roaming bills.
