Staying connected in Croatia
Many trips to Croatia start in Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik and continue by ferry to islands such as Hvar, Brač and Korčula. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Croatia plan to choose
GB plans suit most trips. Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and the data + calls option adds call minutes. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
EU SIMs and Roam Like at Home
Croatia is in the EU, so an EU or EEA SIM uses its domestic allowance here under Roam Like at Home. Operators may cap roaming data on large or unlimited tariffs under fair-use rules, so check yours. An eSIM is most useful if that allowance is small, if you want unlimited data, or if your SIM is from outside the zone, such as the UK, Switzerland or the US; see EU roaming rules explained.
A1, Telemach and coverage
Croatia has three mobile networks: Hrvatski Telekom, A1 and Telemach, the former Tele2, renamed after United Group bought it. Our plans use Telemach and A1; Hrvatski Telekom is not on our plans. HAKOM, the Croatian regulator, reports 5G coverage for 94% of the population at the end of 2024, and about 86% in rural areas. That counts where people live, so expect weaker signal out at sea and in remote coves.
Airports and the road to Dubrovnik
Zagreb Airport (ZAG), the busiest in Croatia, is about 10 km southeast of Zagreb's main station. Split Airport (SPU) lies 19 km from Split, in Kaštela, and Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) about 15.5 km from the city, near Čilipi. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line. On the drive to Dubrovnik, the Pelješac Bridge bypasses Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina's short coastal strip, which is outside Roam Like at Home.
Tip: download offline maps before island days and long ferry crossings. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, and turn its data roaming off if it is from outside the EU and EEA.
