Staying connected in Curaçao

The easiest way to get online in Curaçao is to install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land at Hato or step off a cruise ship in Willemstad. Which Curaçao plan to choose

Networks: Digicel, Flow, Chippie and Setel

Curaçao has two mobile network operators: Digicel, which entered by buying the state-owned Curaçao Telecom, and Flow. Flow is the former UTS, whose mobile brand was Chippie: Liberty Latin America bought UTS in 2019 and rebranded it as Flow, and Setel is a name long paired with UTS, so Chippie, Setel N.V. and Flow on a plan card all mean one network. Coverage is strongest in Willemstad, and 4G is reported to be reliable at western beaches such as Grote Knip (Kenepa) and Playa Lagun.

Arriving at Hato or the cruise piers

Flights land at Curaçao International Airport (CUR), also known as Hato, on the north coast about 12 km from Willemstad. Cruise ships dock in Otrobanda, at the Mega Pier or the older terminal in Santa Anna Bay, near downtown; Punda is across the Queen Emma Bridge. After arrival, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Validity starts on the first connection in Curaçao.

Dutch and EU SIMs in Curaçao

Curaçao is a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands but one of the EU’s overseas countries and territories rather than part of the EU, so roam-like-at-home rules do not apply. Dutch and other EU SIMs pay roaming rates, with pay-as-you-go data on KPN and Vodafone charged by the megabyte, so keep data roaming off on your home SIM.

Tip: Keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its data roaming off, and download an offline map before the drive to Westpunt. On a cruise, put the phone in airplane mode with Wi-Fi on once the ship sails, to keep it off the ship’s maritime network.
