Staying connected in the Dominican Republic

Which Dominican Republic plan to choose

GB plans suit most resort weeks and short trips, since maps, messaging and ride apps take little data. Altice, Orange and Claro

The country has three mobile operators. By regulator Indotel’s figures for the end of 2025, Claro held about 64% of mobile lines, Altice about a third and Viva under 3%. Our plans run on Altice, and a plan card that says Orange means Altice, under the network’s former name: Altice bought Orange Dominicana in 2013 and in 2017 merged it with Tricom under the single Altice brand, retiring the Orange name. Claro is not on our plans.

Arriving in Punta Cana or Santo Domingo

Punta Cana International (PUJ), in La Altagracia province and serving Punta Cana and Bávaro, is the country’s busiest airport and the second busiest in the Caribbean. Las Américas International (SDQ) lies about 20 km east of central Santo Domingo, and Gregorio Luperón International (POP) at Sosúa serves the north. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.

Haiti and other islands

The Dominican Republic covers the eastern five-eighths of Hispaniola and shares the island with Haiti, which is a separate country for your plan. If your trip includes Haiti or another Caribbean island, check on the plan card which countries it covers, or buy a plan for the next country in advance and install it over Wi-Fi.

Tip: download offline maps before excursions to national parks, mangroves or remote beaches, since coverage away from towns and on boat trips is not guaranteed. Keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes, with its data roaming off.
