Many trips to Georgia start in Tbilisi or Kutaisi and continue to Kazbegi, Svaneti or the Black Sea coast at Batumi. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Georgia plans from $1.49, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no calls, SMS or local phone number.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, ride apps such as Bolt and messaging take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days. A Georgia plan works in Georgia only, so if your route includes Armenia or Azerbaijan, add a plan for each; see our Caucasus eSIM guide.
Georgia has three mobile networks. Magti is the largest; Geocell has belonged to Silknet since 2018; and Cellfie is the former Beeline Georgia, renamed in 2023 after a change of owner. Each plan card lists its networks, and a card that shows Beeline or Mobitel (Cellfie) means Cellfie. Where a plan lists several networks, your phone picks whichever is available, which helps in the mountains.
Tbilisi International (TBS), Georgia's busiest airport, is 17 km southeast of the capital. Kutaisi (KUT), 14 km west of the city, is the second busiest and a focus city for Wizz Air, and Batumi (BUS) lies 2 km south of Batumi, about 20 km from the Turkish town of Hopa. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line. Georgia is outside Roam Like at Home, so keep your home SIM's data roaming off, even if it is from the EU.
The Georgian Military Road climbs from Tbilisi past the Gudauri ski resort and over the Jvari Pass to Stepantsminda, formerly Kazbegi. Our Caucasus guide finds signal good in Gudauri and Stepantsminda but patchy on the high bends between them and unreliable in side valleys such as Juta and Truso; the road also closes in heavy snow. In Svaneti, Mestia has town coverage, while Ushguli and the treks between villages have long stretches without signal.
Tip: download offline maps of Kazbegi and Svaneti before you leave Tbilisi or Kutaisi. In Batumi, close to the Turkish border, check that your phone stays on a Georgian network.
