Staying connected in Germany
Many trips to Germany link Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg by train. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Germany plan to choose
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and rail apps take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, which suits remote work and long stays. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
O2, Vodafone and coverage
Germany has four mobile network operators: Telekom; Vodafone; O2, which belongs to Telefónica and includes the former E-Plus network; and 1&1. AirOva plans run on O2 and Vodafone; Telekom and 1&1 are not on our plans. According to the Bundesnetzagentur, about 98% of Germany's area had 4G or 5G in late 2025, and Vodafone and Telefónica each covered about three quarters of the area with 5G.
Arriving at Frankfurt, Munich or Berlin
Frankfurt (FRA), Germany's busiest airport, is 12 km southwest of central Frankfurt. Munich (MUC), the second busiest, lies 28.5 km northeast of the city, and Berlin Brandenburg (BER), the third busiest, 18 km southeast of the centre. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
ICE trains and EU roaming
Deutsche Bahn offers free Wi-Fi, WIFIonICE, on all ICE trains, some IC trains and selected regional trains, in first and second class; it draws on all the mobile networks along the line at once. Germany is in the EU, so SIMs from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine roam there under Roam Like at Home; for other SIMs, including British ones, roaming depends on the operator. Tip: around Lake Constance your phone can switch to a Swiss network without you crossing the border, and Switzerland is outside EU roaming rules. A Germany plan covers Germany only, so if data stops by the lake, choose a German network from your plan card manually in your network settings. Keep roaming off on your home SIM unless it is from the EU.
