Staying connected in Greece
A Greece trip often pairs Athens with a ferry or two to the Cyclades, Crete or the Dodecanese. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Greece plan to choose
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, ferry tickets and messages to island hosts take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. Vodafone, Nova and the Wind name
Greece has three mobile networks: Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova. Wind Hellas merged into Nova in January 2023 and its services were rebranded Nova, so a phone or plan card that still shows “Wind” means Nova. AirOva Greece plans run on Nova and Vodafone; Cosmote is not on our plans.
Arriving at Athens, Heraklion or Santorini
Athens International (ATH), the busiest airport in Greece, is about 20 km east of the city centre; Heraklion (HER) on Crete is 5 km from the city, and Santorini (JTR) about 6 km from Fira. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Ferries, islands and EU roaming
Most island ferries leave from Piraeus, the largest passenger port in Europe. Signal holds near ports and coasts but drops in open water, so save tickets before boarding. SIMs from the EU, the EEA, Moldova and Ukraine roam in Greece at home prices under Roam Like at Home; SIMs from elsewhere, such as UK or US ones, are not covered. Near the Turkish coast, on Rhodes, Kos, Samos or Lesvos, your phone may pick up a Turkish network: select a Greek one manually.
Tip: from mid-May to mid-September the meltemi wind can delay or cancel ferries at short notice, so check your sailing before you head to the port. Download offline maps of each island: beaches at the end of dirt tracks, the Samaria Gorge and Crete’s mountain roads can lose signal. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, with its roaming off.
