Guatemala packs Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Tikal into a small country, and coverage changes sharply between them. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Guatemala plans from $3.49, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no calls, SMS or local phone number. GB plans run on Claro and movistar and unlimited plans on Claro and Tigo, with 4G and 5G where available; each plan card shows whether it is listed as 3G, 4G or 5G.
GB plans suit most trips: shuttles, hostels and volcano tours are booked over WhatsApp, which takes little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days. If you want Tigo, choose a plan whose card lists it. Each plan card names its networks. More in our Guatemala eSIM guide.
Guatemala has two mobile operators: Tigo, the larger and generally stronger in rural areas, and Claro. Movistar on a plan card is a former name: América Móvil, which owns Claro, bought Movistar Guatemala in January 2019 and merged it into Claro. Both launched 5G in July 2022, though one industry outlet saw Claro's launch as closer to advanced 4G, so expect mostly 4G.
La Aurora International (GUA), the country's busiest airport, lies about 6.4 km south of downtown Guatemala City. Mundo Maya (FRS) in Santa Elena, next to Flores, serves Tikal, about 64 km away by road. UK travel advice suggests radio taxis, Uber where available or hotel taxis. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Around Lake Atitlán, coverage is solid in Panajachel and San Pedro but weaker in smaller villages and on the boats between them. Signal is fine in Flores and at the Tikal park entrance but thin under the canopy. On Acatenango, expect signal at the base and variable reception higher up. Guatemala borders Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador; before you cross, check whether your plan covers the next country.
Tip: install the eSIM before you fly, since shuttles between Antigua, Atitlán and Flores are confirmed over WhatsApp. Download offline maps for the highlands and the road to Semuc Champey, and keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its roaming off.
