Staying connected in Hong Kong
The simplest way to get online in Hong Kong is to install a travel eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land. Which Hong Kong plan to choose

csl, SmarTone and 3
csl belongs to HKT, part of the PCCW group. SmarTone is backed by Sun Hung Kai Properties, and 3 Hong Kong, which a plan card may list as H3G, is part of CK Hutchison. China Mobile Hong Kong is not on our plans. Commercial 5G started in April 2020, and by 2024 the government reported 5G for over 90 per cent of the population and on every MTR line.
Arriving at Hong Kong International
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is on the island of Chek Lap Kok in western Hong Kong, and the Airport Express reaches Hong Kong station in about 24 minutes. Since February 2023, local SIM cards need real-name registration; a travel eSIM connects as a roaming line, so there is no counter to visit. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the data is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Keep roaming off on your home SIM.
Shenzhen, Macau and the Great Firewall
Hong Kong and Macau are not affected by the Great Firewall that filters mainland China's internet. The MTR East Rail line runs to Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau, both crossing points into Shenzhen, and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge links Hong Kong with Macau and mainland Zhuhai. Tip: download offline maps before hikes in the country parks and trips to the outlying islands, where coverage is still being extended with about 50 new base stations. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, with its roaming off.
