Most international flights to Iceland land at Keflavík, and Route 1, the Ring Road, circles the whole country. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Iceland plans from $1.49: fixed GB, unlimited data and a data + calls option, on Nova and Síminn, with 4G and 5G where available; each plan card lists its network.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and weather or road checks take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, which suits long road trips and remote work. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Iceland has three mobile operators running 4G and 5G: Síminn, Nova and the company that traded as Vodafone until June 2025, when it was renamed Sýn. Sýn is not on our plans. Nova was the first to offer 5G, in 2020, and Síminn followed in 2021; expect 4G in places and 5G where available.
Keflavík International (KEF), about 50 km southwest of Reykjavík, is Iceland's largest airport. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. As a member of the European Economic Area, Iceland is in the Roam Like at Home area for EU and EEA SIMs; see EU roaming rules explained.
An Icelandic car-rental company reports coverage in virtually every town along the Ring Road, which is paved for all of its roughly 1,300 km. On F-roads into the interior, in parts of the Westfjords and in the central Highlands, signal becomes unreliable and can disappear for long stretches. Highland roads are passable only in summer, and most need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Check road conditions at umferdin.is, and install the 112 Iceland app, one of the official ways to reach the emergency line 112.
Tip: download offline maps before you leave Reykjavík, because maps stop loading without signal even though GPS keeps working. If you are heading somewhere remote, register a travel plan on safetravel.is, and keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes, with roaming off unless it is from the EU or EEA.
