Staying connected in Indonesia

Indonesia spans more than 17,500 islands, and one Indonesia plan works across the country: install it at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Indonesia plans from $1.49, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local phone number. GB plans can use Telkomsel, XL and Indosat, unlimited plans Telkomsel and XL, on 4G with 5G where available.

Which Indonesia plan to choose

GB plans suit resort stays with hotel Wi-Fi and shorter trips. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days, which suits island-hopping, daily uploads and remote work from Canggu or Ubud. Telkomsel, Indosat and XL

Telkomsel, majority-owned by Telkom Indonesia, is the largest operator. Indosat merged with Hutchison 3 Indonesia in January 2022 to form Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and XL merged with Smartfren in April 2025 to form XLSmart. 4G is standard in Bali's tourist areas and the cities; 5G exists in parts of Jakarta, Denpasar and other large cities, but it is patchy.

Arriving in Bali or Jakarta

Bali's Ngurah Rai airport (DPS), about 13 km south of Denpasar, is Indonesia's second busiest after Soekarno-Hatta (CGK), about 20 km northwest of central Jakarta. Within three days before arrival, fill in the free All Indonesia arrival card on its website or app. Bali also charges foreign visitors a one-time levy, payable in advance via Love Bali. After landing, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.

Nusa Penida, the Gilis, Lombok and Komodo

On Nusa Penida, coverage follows the main roads and villages, and west-coast viewpoints such as Kelingking can drop to a single bar; on the fast boats from Sanur, signal fades mid-channel. The Gili Islands are covered near the villages and harbours, while the Rinjani trek on Lombok is patchy or offline. Komodo Airport (LBJ) at Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores, is the gateway to Komodo National Park.

Tip: install Gojek and Grab, the apps for rides and food across Indonesia, and add a payment method before you fly. Many foreign cards cannot pay through QRIS codes, so carry some rupiah. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, with its roaming off.
