Dublin Airport is Ireland's busiest, and the Wild Atlantic Way, a 2,500 km driving route from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal to Kinsale in County Cork, runs along the west coast. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Ireland plans from $1.49: fixed GB, unlimited data and a data + calls option, on Eir and 3, with 4G and 5G where available; each plan card lists its network.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and ticket apps take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, which suits road trips and long stays. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Ireland has three mobile network operators: Eir, Three and Vodafone. A plan card that says Eir Mobile means Eir, and one that says 3 means Three; Vodafone is not on our plans. Eir launched 5G on 24 October 2019 in ten cities and towns, including Dublin, Cork and Galway, and Three followed in September 2020. To check a spot, search the regulator ComReg's outdoor coverage map by address or Eircode.
Dublin Airport (DUB) is about 7 km north of the city centre. Cork Airport (ORK), 6.5 km south of the city centre, is the Republic's second busiest, and Shannon (SNN) on the west coast lies between Ennis and Limerick. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Ireland is in the European Union, so SIMs from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine roam there under Roam Like at Home. Northern Ireland is different: it shares an open border with the Republic but is part of the United Kingdom, which is outside that area. If your route crosses the border, check whether your plan also covers the UK, or see our UK eSIM guide.
Tip: install the eSIM over Wi-Fi a few days before you fly, and keep roaming off on your home SIM unless it is from the EU or EEA. Download offline maps before long drives in the west, and leave the home SIM in the phone for bank codes.
