Staying connected in Jamaica

Install a travel eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land in Montego Bay or Kingston. Which Jamaica plan to choose

GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and ride apps take little data. Flow, Digicel and Cable & Wireless

Jamaica has had two main mobile operators, Digicel and Flow, since Digicel bought Claro’s Jamaican business in 2011–2012. Flow is the brand of Cable & Wireless Jamaica, part of Liberty Latin America, and replaced the earlier LIME brand in 2015, so Cable & Wireless (Flow) on a plan card means the Flow network. 5G is new in Jamaica and was launched first for Flow’s own postpaid and business customers; each plan card shows whether a plan is listed as 4G or 5G.

Arriving in Montego Bay or Kingston

Sangster International (MBJ), about 5 km east of Montego Bay, is the most popular airport for north-coast holidays, and Norman Manley International (KIN), about 19 km from New Kingston, is the second busiest. Cruise ships call at Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios and Port Royal for Kingston. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.

Coverage in the west and the mountains

Hurricane Melissa came ashore in Westmoreland as a Category 5 storm on 28 October 2025, and telecoms were hit hardest in western Jamaica, above all in Westmoreland and St Elizabeth, where network repairs went on for months. In the Blue Mountains and elsewhere inland, coverage away from towns is not guaranteed either.

Tip: download offline maps and save your bookings before heading for the Blue Mountains or the far west. On a cruise, switch to airplane mode with Wi-Fi on once the ship sails, and keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its data roaming off.
