Kazakhstan is the world's ninth-largest country and the largest landlocked one, and Almaty, its largest city, lies almost 1,000 km from the capital, Astana. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Kazakhstan plans from $1.49: fixed GB, unlimited data and a data + calls option, on Beeline.
GB plans suit most city stays, since maps, ride apps and messaging take little data. Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and the data + calls option adds call minutes. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Kazakhstan has three mobile operators: Beeline, Kcell and Tele2, which belongs to the same company as Altel. Our plans run on Beeline. Beeline is run by KaR-Tel, so a plan card that shows Kar-Tel means Beeline, and Forbes Kazakhstan counted 10.5 million Beeline subscribers in early 2023. Kcell, Tele2 and Altel are not on our plans.
Almaty International (ALA), the main international gateway and the busiest airport in Central Asia, lies about 15 km northeast of central Almaty. Nursultan Nazarbayev International (NQZ) is about 12 km southeast of Astana's city centre. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line. A local SIM, by contrast, means verifying a phone bought abroad by its IMEI within 30 days, or it loses service.
UK travel advice warns that mobile and satellite phone coverage can be extremely limited in remote areas, that trekking often means travelling to very remote places, and that mountain areas carry a high risk of avalanches, landslides and rockfalls. Charyn Canyon lies about 200 km east of Almaty, near the Chinese border, and Big Almaty Lake, at 2,511 m, about 15 km south of the city. We cannot confirm coverage on the roads between cities, so download offline maps first.
Tip: Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan's capital, is 190 km west of Almaty, and a Kazakhstan plan works in Kazakhstan only, so add a Kyrgyzstan plan before you cross; more in our Kazakhstan eSIM guide. UK travel advice also says not to trek alone.
