Staying connected in Kenya

Many trips to Kenya start in Nairobi and continue to the Maasai Mara or to the coast around Mombasa and Diani. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Kenya plans from $2.99, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local number.

Which Kenya plan to choose

GB plans suit most safaris, since messaging, maps and booking apps take little data, and they run on Safaricom. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and run on Airtel; each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G. If most of your trip is in parks or remote areas, ask your lodge which network works there before you choose.

Safaricom, Airtel and coverage

Safaricom holds roughly two thirds of Kenya's mobile subscriptions and Airtel most of the rest, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya; the third operator, Telkom Kenya, is not on our plans. The regulator reports 4G coverage for 97.3% of the population. That counts where people live, not open parkland, so expect gaps between towns and on game drives.

Arriving in Nairobi or Mombasa

Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO), about 18 km southeast of central Nairobi, is Kenya's largest and busiest airport, and Wilson Airport (WIL), 4 km south of the city centre, has flights to many regional airports in Kenya. Moi International (MBA) serves Mombasa, and Ukunda Airport (UKA) serves Diani. After landing, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line. A local SIM, by contrast, has to be registered with your original passport.

Maasai Mara, Diani and the coast

The Maasai Mara reserve borders Tanzania's Serengeti, and its eastern edge is about 224 km from Nairobi; the wildebeest migration usually reaches it between July and October. A safari guide site describes connectivity there as hit-and-miss, while most leading lodges offer Wi-Fi, at least in their main areas. If your safari crosses into the Serengeti, check whether your plan also covers Tanzania, or add a Tanzania plan. Diani Beach lies about 30 km south of Mombasa.

Tip: M-Pesa, Kenya's mobile money service, runs on a Safaricom line, and a travel eSIM gives you no Kenyan number, so carry a card and some cash; more in our Kenya eSIM guide. Download offline maps and bookings before game drives, and keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its roaming off.

Kenya eSIM FAQ

Which network will my Kenya eSIM use?
It depends on the plan type: GB plans use Safaricom, and unlimited plans use Airtel; each plan card lists its network and whether it is listed as 4G or 5G. Safaricom holds roughly two thirds of Kenya's mobile subscriptions and Airtel most of the rest. Telkom Kenya, the third operator, is not on our plans. Check compatibility →
Can I use M-Pesa with a travel eSIM?
No. M-Pesa is Safaricom's mobile money service and runs on a Safaricom line, while a travel eSIM is data only and gives you no Kenyan number. If you need M-Pesa for a long stay, get a local SIM, which has to be registered with your original passport, and keep the eSIM for data. Install guide → · QR code not working? 9 fixes
Will I have signal in the Maasai Mara?
Only in places. A safari guide site describes connectivity in the Mara as hit-and-miss, slower or more intermittent the more remote you are, while most leading lodges offer Wi-Fi, at least in their main areas. Download offline maps and bookings before you set off, and ask your lodge which network works there.
Is the unlimited Kenya plan really unlimited?
Yes. Our unlimited Kenya plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days. They run on Airtel and are data only, with no calls, SMS or local number. If you mainly use maps and messaging, a GB plan may be enough; Kenya plans start from $2.99.
Will my phone work with a Kenya eSIM?
Most phones from 2018+ support eSIM (iPhone XS+, Pixel 3+, Galaxy S20+) and must be carrier-unlocked. Check our compatibility page before buying.
How do I get my Kenya eSIM?
Instantly. After payment a QR code appears on screen and is emailed to you. Scan it in your phone settings — you can install before you fly.
When does the plan start in Kenya?
Validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a network in Kenya, so you can install it in advance and it won't start counting until you arrive.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your home SIM stays active for calls and texts; the Kenya eSIM is used only for data.
Does it support hotspot / tethering?
It depends on the plan and the local network: many plans allow it, but some local operators limit or block tethering, so we can't guarantee it on every plan. If you need hotspot, message support before you buy and we'll check your destination.
Which mobile networks does the Kenya eSIM use?
Plans connect to Safaricom (4G), Airtel (4G). Your phone picks an available network automatically; 4G/5G depends on local coverage.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Kenya?
Yes. Unlimited plans for Kenya have no data cap and no fair-usage limit: you only choose the number of days (1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30), from $16.49. They are in the “Unlimited” tab above.
