The easiest way to get online in Kosovo is to install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land in Pristina or cross the border by road. AirOva sells Kosovo plans with a fixed amount of data, from $5.99, all on Vala.
Kosovo plans are GB plans only, with no unlimited option and no calls, so pick a size with some headroom: 3–5 GB usually covers a week of maps, messaging, translation and photos, and you will want more if you stream video or work online. The plans are data-only, with no local phone number, so call over WhatsApp, Viber or FaceTime.
Kosovo has two main mobile operators: Vala, the mobile arm of Kosovo Telecom, and IPKO. AirOva plans for Kosovo run on Vala, and each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; IPKO is not part of our plans. Regulator figures put mobile service in every inhabited area and across about 94% of the territory, so Pristina, Prizren and Peja are all covered. Signal thins out in the mountains: in the Rugova Gorge outside Peja it is generally fine near the entrance but drops sharply deeper into the canyon.
Flights land at Prishtina International Airport Adem Jashari (PRN), Kosovo’s only international airport, about 15 km southwest of the capital. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Coming in by road from Albania, North Macedonia or Montenegro? Switch over once you are across the border. Validity starts on the first connection in Kosovo.
Kosovo is outside the EU’s roam-like-at-home area: EU ministers have so far only authorised talks on extending it to Kosovo and the other Western Balkan partners, so EU SIMs pay roaming rates here. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM. Hikers on the Peaks of the Balkans trail cross the Rugova Mountains from Peja towards Montenegro and Albania, and a Kosovo plan stops at the border; on the Albanian side, the remote Doberdol valley has no mobile signal at all.
Tip: Download offline maps of Rugova and the trail before you leave Peja, keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its data roaming off, and for the wider route see our Balkans road trip guide on where EU roaming stops.
