Staying connected in Laos

Many trips to Laos link Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, often by the Laos–China Railway, while others cross from Thailand at Huay Xai for the two-day slow boat down the Mekong. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Laos plans from $1.99, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local phone number.

Which Laos plan to choose

GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and booking apps take little data, and run on Lao Telecom. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and run on Lao Telecom. Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available.

Laos's networks and 5G

Our plans run on Lao Telecom. Lao Telecom, the incumbent operator, is 51% owned by the Lao government, and its rival Unitel is not on our plans. 5G arrived in parts of Vientiane in September 2020, and by the end of 2024 it was offered at selected spots in Luang Prabang, Champassak, Bokeo and Savannakhet too, not across whole provinces.

Arriving in Vientiane or Luang Prabang

Wattay International (VTE), the main gateway, is 3 km from central Vientiane, and Luang Prabang International (LPQ), the second busiest airport, lies about 4 km from the town centre. UK travel advice says you must complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form online within 3 days before arrival, so do it at home on Wi-Fi. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line.

Railway, river and rainy season

The Laos–China Railway, open since December 2021, runs almost half its length through 75 tunnels, so download what you need before boarding. The slow boats between Huay Xai, on the Thai border, and Luang Prabang take two days with a night in Pakbeng, and we cannot confirm coverage on the river. UK travel advice says that in the rainy season, from May to October, cross-country journeys can take much longer than scheduled and have limited mobile coverage, and that unexploded weapons remain a hazard, so keep to main routes in rural areas.

Tip: crossing the Friendship Bridge into Thailand or travelling on to Vietnam? A Laos plan works in Laos only, so add a plan for the next country; more in our Laos eSIM guide.

Laos eSIM FAQ

Which network will my Laos eSIM use?
GB plans run on Lao Telecom, and unlimited plans on Lao Telecom. Each plan card names its network and whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available. Unitel, a rival operator, is not on our plans. Check compatibility →
Will I have signal on the slow boat and the train?
Only in places. The slow boats from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang take two days, with a night in Pakbeng, and we cannot confirm coverage on the river. Almost half of the Laos–China Railway runs through its 75 tunnels, so the signal may come and go. Download maps, tickets and something to watch before you set off. Do I need to fill in a form before I arrive?
Yes, at the main entry points. UK travel advice says all foreign nationals must complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) online within 3 days before arrival, and again within 3 days before departure. It applies at Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports and at the first Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, and it does not replace a visa, so fill it in at home on Wi-Fi.
Is the unlimited Laos plan really unlimited?
Yes. Our unlimited Laos plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days. They run on Lao Telecom and are data only, with no calls, SMS or local phone number. If you mostly use maps and messaging, a GB plan may be enough; Laos plans start from $1.99.
Will my phone work with a Laos eSIM?
Most phones from 2018+ support eSIM (iPhone XS+, Pixel 3+, Galaxy S20+) and must be carrier-unlocked. Check our compatibility page before buying.
How do I get my Laos eSIM?
Instantly. After payment a QR code appears on screen and is emailed to you. Scan it in your phone settings — you can install before you fly.
When does the plan start in Laos?
Validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a network in Laos, so you can install it in advance and it won't start counting until you arrive.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your home SIM stays active for calls and texts; the Laos eSIM is used only for data.
Does it support hotspot / tethering?
It depends on the plan and the local network: many plans allow it, but some local operators limit or block tethering, so we can't guarantee it on every plan. If you need hotspot, message support before you buy and we'll check your destination.
Which mobile networks does the Laos eSIM use?
Plans connect to Lao Telecom (5G). Your phone picks an available network automatically; 4G/5G depends on local coverage.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Laos?
Yes. Unlimited plans for Laos have no data cap and no fair-usage limit: you only choose the number of days (1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30), from $9.99. They are in the “Unlimited” tab above.
