International visitors land at Velana International Airport next to Malé, and most then move on to a resort or local island by seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Maldives plans from $10.49, with fixed GB of data, on Dhiraagu.
AirOva’s Maldives plans are GB plans. A resort week with Wi-Fi in the evenings often needs only 1–3 GB for maps, messages and transfer updates; island-hopping, video calls or daily uploads call for a bigger plan. All plans are data-only, with no local phone number, so call over WhatsApp or another app. Not sure? See how much data you need.
The Maldives has two mobile operators: Dhiraagu, the country’s original telecom company, founded in 1988 and part-owned by the government, and Ooredoo Maldives, launched as Wataniya in 2005. AirOva’s plans run on Dhiraagu. Both networks have long covered all populated islands and advertise nationwide 4G; Dhiraagu has concentrated its investment on Malé and the resort islands, and its coverage has been rated wider than Ooredoo’s.
Flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé Island, linked to Malé and Hulhumalé by the Sinamalé Bridge. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Validity starts on the first connection in the Maldives, so installing at home a few days early costs nothing.
Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so if your international flight lands after about 3:00–3:30 pm you may spend a night near the airport before the transfer. Seaplane check-in is a short walk from the arrival hall, followed by a short shuttle ride to the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal. Signal can drop on boat trips between islands, and while most resorts and guesthouses have Wi-Fi, at some it is only reliable in public areas such as the lobby and restaurants.
Tip: Before a seaplane or a long speedboat ride, save your booking, the resort’s contact details and offline maps, as connections can drop between islands. Keep your home SIM in the phone with data roaming off for bank codes, and let the eSIM carry your data.
