Staying connected in Mauritius

The simplest way to get online in Mauritius is to install a travel eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land at Plaine Magnien. Which Mauritius plan to choose

Emtel, my.t and Cellplus

Emtel was founded in 1989 by the Currimjee Jeewanjee Group. It launched the first 3G network in Africa in 2004 and was the first fully operational LTE provider in Mauritius in 2012. Cellplus Mobile Communications, a subsidiary of Mauritius Telecom, launched the island's GSM network in 1996. Its services were sold as Orange from 2008, and since November 2017 Mauritius Telecom has used one brand, my.t, for fixed, mobile, broadband and TV. So a plan card that says my.t or Cellplus means the same group.

Arriving at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is at Plaine Magnien, about 48 km southeast of Port Louis. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the data is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Keep roaming off on your home SIM.

Visiting Rodrigues

Rodrigues is an autonomous outer island of Mauritius. Air Mauritius flies there from the main airport to Plaine Corail Airport (RRG), which serves Port Mathurin. Emtel extended its network to Rodrigues in 2006, so if the island is on your route, choose a plan whose card lists Emtel.

Tip: download offline maps before day trips around the island, and save your hotel address for the drive from the airport. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, with its roaming off.
