Staying connected in Mayotte

Mayotte is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, made up mainly of Grande-Terre, home to the capital Mamoudzou, and the smaller Petite-Terre, where the airport is. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Mayotte plan to choose

GB plans suit most visits: maps, messaging and photos take about 3–5 GB in a typical week. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days — better for long stays, video calls or remote work. All plans are data-only, with no local phone number, so call over WhatsApp or another app.

Networks and coverage

Four operators run mobile networks in Mayotte: Orange, SFR, Only and Maore Mobile. Orange was the first to launch 5G on the island and switched it on across most of its sites, in towns and rural areas alike; at launch its 5G reached about 80% of the population. Plans listed as 5G use it wherever it is available, while plans listed as 4G run on 4G.

Arriving at Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi

Flights land at Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi International Airport (DZA) on Petite-Terre, Mayotte’s only airport with scheduled services; Mamoudzou is across the water on Grande-Terre, reached by ferry from Dzaoudzi. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Validity starts on the first connection in Mayotte, so installing early costs nothing.

EU roaming in Mayotte

Mayotte has been an outermost region of the EU since 2014, and the French regulator Arcep treats it, like the other overseas departments, as part of the EU for roaming. A French or other EU/EEA SIM should roam there at home prices, but check that your operator lists Mayotte and its fair-use limit. Tip: On a French or other EU plan, check your operator’s Mayotte terms before you leave. If Mayotte is not listed or the allowance is small, turn data roaming off on the home SIM and let the eSIM carry your data, keeping the home line for calls and bank codes.
