Staying connected in Mexico

The quickest way to get online in Mexico is to install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land in Mexico City or Cancún. Which Mexico plan to choose

GB plans suit most trips. A beach resort week usually fits in 3–5 GB and seven days in Mexico City in 5–8 GB, while a road trip with constant navigation, or remote work, calls for 20 GB or more. Coverage: cities, coasts and the long drives

Mexico City is densely covered from Roma and Condesa to Polanco and Coyoacán, though the Metro can be patchy in tunnels. The Cancún hotel zone, Playa del Carmen, Tulum town and Highway 307 are well covered, as are Oaxaca city, San Cristóbal de las Casas, La Paz and Los Cabos. Signal thins at cenotes down dirt roads, in Sian Ka'an and on Holbox, in Oaxaca's Sierra Norte, on Chiapas jungle roads, in Baja's central desert around Cataviña and along much of the Copper Canyon's El Chepe route, and cave cenotes have none at all.

Arriving at Mexico City or Cancún

Most visitors land at Mexico City's Benito Juárez airport (MEX) or Cancún (CUN); Mexico City also has Felipe Ángeles (NLU), well north of the city, so check your ticket. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Apps and local rules

Uber and DiDi operate in most cities, though app pickups at airports, especially in Cancún, have been restricted. WhatsApp is how Mexico communicates: hotels, tour operators and drivers confirm bookings over it. Routing apps offer cuotas (toll roads) and libres (free roads); toll roads are faster and generally safer. Since January 2026 new local SIMs must be registered before they work; for roaming lines such as a travel eSIM the rules were still being defined at the time of writing. One last tip: rural Mexico usually means Telcel. If signal is weak in the countryside, turn off automatic network selection for the eSIM line and try Telcel manually when your plan card lists it.
