Mongolia has two connectivity worlds: Ulaanbaatar and the provincial centres are well served, the steppe and the Gobi between them largely are not. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land at Chinggis Khaan International. AirOva sells Mongolia plans from $4.49, with fixed GB or unlimited data, on Mobicom and Unitel, with 5G where available — each plan card names its network and whether it is listed as 4G or 5G.
GB plans suit most tours, as many road days have little signal: about 3 GB covers Ulaanbaatar and a short Gobi trip, 5 GB two weeks of touring, 8 GB a month including the west. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days — best for long stays or remote work in the capital. Plans are data-only, with no local phone number.
Mobicom is Mongolia’s largest operator and Unitel the second; Skytel and G-Mobile are smaller. 4G reached Ulaanbaatar in 2016 and has since spread to the provincial capitals. 5G has launched, and Unitel has extended 5G pilots to all 21 provincial centres, but in practice expect it in parts of the capital. The Gobi, the Khangai mountains, the Khövsgöl Lake region and most of the steppe have no reliable signal, and highways have signal mainly near larger towns.
International flights land at Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN), opened in 2021 in place of the old Buyant-Ukhaa airport, about 50 km south of central Ulaanbaatar. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Validity starts on the first connection in Mongolia, so installing early costs nothing.
Touring with a driver between ger camps means long days out of range, so prepare in the capital: download offline maps of the whole route, save your driver’s and tour operator’s numbers and bookings offline, and tell people at home when you will be out of contact. The eSIM reconnects whenever you pass a covered town. Our Mongolia eSIM guide goes region by region.
Tip: Cold drains batteries fast, so in the colder months keep the phone in an inside pocket, carry a power bank and charge everything whenever a camp has power. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, with data roaming off.
No SIM shops, no roaming bills.
