Staying connected in New Zealand

New Zealand road trips run on maps and bookings, so install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells New Zealand plans from $1.49, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local phone number. Plans run on One NZ, on 4G with 5G where available.

Which New Zealand plan to choose

GB plans suit city stays and shorter trips, since maps, messaging and bookings take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days, which suits long campervan trips and remote work. More road-trip tips in our New Zealand eSIM guide.

One NZ, formerly Vodafone

Vodafone New Zealand became One NZ on 3 April 2023, so a plan card that says “Vodafone (One NZ)” means the same network. One NZ says its 4G and 5G reach 99% of the places where New Zealanders live, work and play, but only about 60% of the country's land. One NZ also uses over 570 shared rural sites built by the Rural Connectivity Group. Spark and 2degrees are not on our plans.

Arriving in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington or Queenstown

Auckland Airport (AKL), 21 km south of the city centre, is the country's busiest, followed by Christchurch (CHC), 12 km northwest of the city, and Wellington (WLG), about 5.5 km southeast of downtown. Queenstown (ZQN) in Frankton is the fourth busiest. Most visitors need an NZeTA, which can take up to 72 hours, or a visa. After landing, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.

Fiordland, the Great Walks and Cook Strait

The Department of Conservation (DOC) says there is no mobile coverage between Te Anau Downs and Milford, and no shops or fuel between Te Anau and Milford Sound, so download maps and fill up in Te Anau. The Milford Track has no cellphone coverage, and DOC advises carrying a distress beacon. Interislander and Bluebridge ferries cross Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton in about three and a half hours.

Tip: download offline maps of the whole route before you leave the city, and on a multi-day walk do not treat your phone as your safety plan. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, with its roaming off.

New Zealand eSIM FAQ

Which network will my New Zealand eSIM use?
GB plans run on One NZ, and unlimited plans on One NZ, on 4G with 5G where available. One NZ is the former Vodafone New Zealand, renamed in April 2023, so a plan card that reads “Vodafone (One NZ)” means the same network. Spark and 2degrees, the country's other two mobile operators, are not on our plans. Check compatibility →
Will I have signal at Milford Sound and on the Great Walks?
Do not count on it. The Department of Conservation says there is no mobile coverage between Te Anau Downs and Milford, and none on the Milford Track, where it advises carrying a distress beacon. Download maps, tickets and track notes before you leave Te Anau. Install guide → · QR code not working? 9 fixes
Is the unlimited New Zealand plan really unlimited?
Yes. Our unlimited New Zealand plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days. They are data only, with no calls, SMS or local number. New Zealand plans start from $1.49.
Does one plan cover both islands?
Yes. A New Zealand plan works on the North Island and the South Island wherever your plan's network has signal, including more than 570 rural sites that the three mobile operators share through the Rural Connectivity Group. One NZ itself says its network reaches only about 60% of the country's land, so download offline maps for remote roads.
Will my phone work with a New Zealand eSIM?
Most phones from 2018+ support eSIM (iPhone XS+, Pixel 3+, Galaxy S20+) and must be carrier-unlocked. Check our compatibility page before buying.
How do I get my New Zealand eSIM?
Instantly. After payment a QR code appears on screen and is emailed to you. Scan it in your phone settings — you can install before you fly.
When does the plan start in New Zealand?
Validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a network in New Zealand, so you can install it in advance and it won't start counting until you arrive.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your home SIM stays active for calls and texts; the New Zealand eSIM is used only for data.
Does it support hotspot / tethering?
It depends on the plan and the local network: many plans allow it, but some local operators limit or block tethering, so we can't guarantee it on every plan. If you need hotspot, message support before you buy and we'll check your destination.
Which mobile networks does the New Zealand eSIM use?
Plans connect to One NZ (5G). Your phone picks an available network automatically; 4G/5G depends on local coverage.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for New Zealand?
Yes. Unlimited plans for New Zealand have no data cap and no fair-usage limit: you only choose the number of days (1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30), from $5.49. They are in the “Unlimited” tab above.
