A trip to Oman often combines Muscat with Nizwa and the Hajar Mountains, the Wahiba Sands and the coast, or Salalah in the south. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Oman plans from $2.49, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local phone number.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and booking apps take little data, and run on Omantel. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and run on Ooredoo and Vodafone. Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available.

The regulator TRA counted 6,432 5G base stations in 2025 and reports 5G coverage for more than 98% of homes in Muscat governorate. It is also gradually phasing out 3G.

Salalah International (SLL), the second international airport, lies 5.5 km northeast of Salalah's city centre. After landing, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line. A local tourist SIM, by contrast, means showing an original passport. Oman is outside the EU, so Roam Like at Home does not apply to EU SIMs.
WhatsApp video calls are not possible in Oman without a VPN, the Oman Observer reported, and the TRA has warned against VPNs, so we cannot promise app calls. Jebel Akhdar, about 150 km from Muscat, is reachable only by four-wheel drive, and the Wahiba Sands stretch about 180 km from north to south. UK travel advice says to take a well-equipped 4x4, a mobile or satellite phone and water on desert and mountain trips, and warns that wadis can flash-flood after heavy rain from October to March.
Tip: Musandam, Oman's exclave on the Strait of Hormuz, is reached by road only through the UAE, so if you drive there from Dubai, add a UAE plan for the way. We cannot confirm coverage at desert camps, so download your whole route offline; more in our Oman eSIM guide.
