Whether you stay in Lima or fly on to Cusco, install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Peru plans from $2.99, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no calls, SMS or local phone number. GB plans run on Claro and unlimited plans on Movistar; each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G.
GB plans suit most trips: maps, messaging, ride apps and e-tickets take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days. Each plan card names its network. More in our Peru eSIM guide.
Peru has four mobile operators: Claro, the largest by number of lines, plus Bitel, Entel and Movistar. In the regulator Osiptel's figures for the end of 2025, Movistar had guaranteed coverage in 79% of populated areas and Claro in 62%. Where a plan card lists two networks, your phone can switch to the other where one is weak. Telefónica sold Movistar Peru in 2025, but the network still trades as Movistar.
Jorge Chávez International (LIM) is in Callao, about 11 km north-west of Lima's historic centre; its new terminal opened in June 2025. UK travel advice warns of robbers posing as taxi drivers there: use the official taxi desks outside the baggage hall or a licensed app. Cusco's airport (CUZ) lies about 3.7 km from the historic centre, at 3,310 m. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
There is no Wi-Fi at the Machu Picchu site itself, and on the four-day Inca Trail you should not expect a data connection for most of the trek. Lake Titicaca lies on the border with Bolivia, and Peru also borders Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Chile. Before you cross, check on the plan card whether your plan covers the next country.
Tip: save Machu Picchu entry and train tickets offline before you set out, and download offline maps for the Sacred Valley and any trek. Altitude and cold shorten battery life, so carry a power bank, and avoid using your phone at the roadside, where motorbike riders may snatch it.
No SIM shops, no roaming bills.
