Staying connected in Portugal
A trip to Portugal often takes in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, and sometimes Madeira or the Azores. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Portugal plan to choose
GB plans suit most trips, since maps and messaging take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, which suits remote work and long stays. NOS, Vodafone and 5G
Portugal has four mobile network operators: MEO, owned by Altice Portugal; NOS; Vodafone; and DIGI, which launched in late 2024. AirOva plans run on Vodafone and NOS; MEO and DIGI are not on our plans. According to the regulator ANACOM, every Portuguese municipality had 5G by July 2023, and at the end of September 2023 NOS ran 47% of the country's 5G base stations and Vodafone 36%.
Arriving in Lisbon, Porto or Faro
Lisbon Airport (LIS) is 7 km northeast of the historic centre, Porto (OPO) 11 km northwest of the Clérigos Tower, and Faro (FAO), which serves the Algarve, 4 km west of Faro. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Madeira, the Azores and EU roaming
Madeira and the Azores, autonomous regions of Portugal, are among the EU's outermost regions and so inside the EU. Madeira Airport (FNC) is 13.2 km east-northeast of Funchal, and João Paulo II (PDL), the busiest airport in the Azores, 2 km west of Ponta Delgada. Portugal is in the EU, so SIMs from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine roam there under Roam Like at Home; for other SIMs, including British ones, roaming depends on the operator.
Tip: install the eSIM over Wi-Fi a few days before you fly, and keep roaming off on your home SIM unless it is from the EU. Before hikes on Madeira or the Azores, download offline maps, and leave the home SIM in the phone for bank codes.
