Staying connected in Qatar

Whether you are spending a week in Doha or breaking a long-haul journey at Hamad International, the easiest way to get online in Qatar is to install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Qatar plan to choose

GB plans suit most trips: about 3–5 GB covers a typical week of maps, messaging, translation and photos. Networks: Ooredoo and Vodafone

Qatar has two mobile operators, and AirOva plans run on Ooredoo and Vodafone. Ooredoo, formerly Q-Tel, is the incumbent: it switched on commercial 5G in May 2018, starting in central Doha between The Pearl and Hamad airport, and by 2020 said its 5G reached more than 90% of populated areas. Vodafone Qatar, which won the country’s second mobile licence, has operated since 2009 and also runs 5G. The regulator ordered both operators to retire 3G by the end of 2025 to concentrate on 4G and 5G.

Arriving at Hamad International

Flights land at Hamad International Airport (DOH), east of central Doha and the home base of Qatar Airways. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Validity starts on the first connection in Qatar, so installing at home a few days early costs nothing.

Stopovers and the Doha Metro

If you are only changing planes, Hamad’s free terminal Wi-Fi may be all you need. If you leave the airport, the Doha Metro Red Line runs from the station at Terminal 1 directly to downtown Doha, and your own data keeps maps, messaging and bookings working from the moment you step off the train.

Tip: Airport Wi-Fi does not follow you into the city, so switch the eSIM on before you leave the terminal. Keep your home SIM in the phone with data roaming off, so bank codes still reach you without roaming data charges.
