Which South Africa plan to choose

Networks and power cuts
Four operators dominate South Africa's mobile market: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom; the smaller Rain is not on our plans. During past load-shedding, the country's rolling power cuts, operators said tower backup batteries last some hours and that a tower stops working once they run flat. Eskom has reported a run of more than 500 days without load-shedding, starting on 16 May 2025.
Arriving in Johannesburg or Cape Town
O. R. Tambo International (JNB), serving Johannesburg and Pretoria, is South Africa's main airport; Cape Town International (CPT), about 20 km from the city centre, is the second-busiest. Kruger and the Garden Route
Kruger National Park stretches about 360 km from north to south. Skukuza Airport (SZK) is the only commercial airport inside the park, and Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP), 27 km by road from Mbombela, mainly serves Kruger visitors. A South African antenna maker describes coverage in the park as patchy: concentrated in the south, with pockets in the centre and north and sizable gaps in between. The Garden Route runs 300 km along the coast from Witsand to Storms River, and George Airport (GRJ) serves the Garden Route District.
Tip: download offline maps for Kruger and long drives before you leave town. Ask your lodge or camp what Wi-Fi it offers, carry a power bank, and keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its roaming off.
