Staying connected in Spain
A trip to Spain often pairs Madrid or Barcelona with the Andalusian coast or the islands. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Spain plan to choose
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and ticket apps take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, which suits remote work and long stays. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Digi
Spain has four mobile network operators: Movistar, run by Telefónica; Orange; Vodafone; and Digi. In March 2024 Orange Spain merged with MásMóvil to form MasOrange, the country's biggest mobile operator; Orange's network now includes the former Yoigo network. AirOva plans run on Orange, Movistar and Vodafone; Digi is not on our plans.
Arriving in Madrid, Barcelona, Palma or Málaga
Madrid-Barajas (MAD), Spain's busiest airport, is 13 km northeast of the Puerta del Sol. Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) lies 15 km southwest of the city centre, Palma de Mallorca (PMI) 8 km east of Palma, and Málaga (AGP), the main airport for the Costa del Sol, 8 km southwest of the city. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Islands, trains and EU roaming
The Balearic and Canary Islands are part of Spain and of the EU, where the Canaries count as an outermost region. Spanish networks serve both: Movistar said in 2021 that its 5G already reached more than 85% of people there. Renfe's free PlayRenfe Wi-Fi runs on all AVE services and on Avlo. Across Spain, SIMs from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine roam under Roam Like at Home; for other SIMs, including British ones, roaming depends on the operator. Tip: install the eSIM over Wi-Fi a few days before you fly, save train tickets and boarding passes offline, and keep the home SIM in the phone for bank codes, with its roaming off unless it is from the EU.
