Staying connected in Sri Lanka

Mobitel and Hutch
Sri Lanka has three mobile network operators: Dialog, SLTMobitel and Hutch; our plans use Hutch and Mobitel. Mobitel, incorporated in 1993, has been wholly owned by Sri Lanka Telecom since 2002 and was the country's second-largest mobile operator in 2024. Hutch, controlled by CK Hutchison, completed its takeover of Etisalat's Sri Lankan business in December 2018 and is the third-largest operator.
Arriving at Bandaranaike International
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is at Katunayake, near Negombo, about 32 km north of Colombo. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the data is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Keep roaming off on your home SIM.
What to expect from 5G
Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G, but 5G in Sri Lanka is still at an early stage: Mobitel's network has been described as covering only the Colombo district. Outside the capital, plan on 4G, which is enough for maps, messaging and video calls.
Tip: download offline maps and your train tickets before long train rides and trips away from the cities, in case the signal drops. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes, with its roaming off.
