Many trips to Switzerland combine Zurich or Geneva with the Alps by train. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Switzerland plans from $1.49: fixed GB, unlimited data and a data + calls option, on Swiss networks with 4G and 5G where available.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and the SBB timetable take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Switzerland has three mobile network operators: Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. GB plans run on Sunrise and Salt, unlimited plans on Sunrise and Swisscom, and data + calls plans on Sunrise and Swisscom; each plan card lists its networks. According to ComCom, the Swiss communications regulator, almost 100% of the population had 4G at the end of 2025, and Swisscom and Sunrise each reported 5G for 99% or more. That counts where people live, not high-alpine trails, so carry offline maps on hikes.
Zurich (ZRH), Switzerland's largest airport, lies 9 km north of the city centre. Geneva (GVA) is 4 km northwest of the centre, right on the French border, and Basel's EuroAirport (BSL) stands on French soil, 3.5 km northwest of Basel. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
SBB's free FreeSurf data on long-distance trains requires a Swiss SIM, so on a travel eSIM you use your plan's own data. The 57 km Gotthard Base Tunnel opened in 2016 with 4G inside. Switzerland is in neither the EU nor the EEA, so EU SIMs get no Roam Like at Home there unless their operator extends it. More in EU roaming rules explained.
Tip: near the borders phones can join a neighbouring country's network on their own, as in Kreuzlingen, where they connect to German networks. A Switzerland plan covers Switzerland only, so if data stops, pick a Swiss network from your plan card manually. Going up to Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 m? Most of the line runs through tunnels, so download tickets and maps first; the station has free Wi-Fi.
