Staying connected in Tanzania

Many trips to Tanzania combine a safari in the north, around Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, with beach days on Zanzibar. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Tanzania plans from $5.49, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local number. GB plans run on Airtel and unlimited plans on Airtel.

Which Tanzania plan to choose

GB plans suit most safaris, since messaging, maps and booking apps take little data; each card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G, so on a 5G plan expect 4G, with 5G where available. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days. A card that says Celtel or Zain means Airtel: those are its former names in Tanzania.

Airtel and Tanzania's other networks

Airtel Tanzania began as Celtel, became Zain in 2008 and Airtel in 2010. Regulator figures put Airtel third, with about a fifth of mobile subscriptions, behind Vodacom and Yas, the former Tigo; those two, Halotel and TTCL are not on our plans. The regulator also reports 4G coverage for about 94% of the population. That counts where people live, not the parks, so expect gaps on game drives.

Arriving in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar

Julius Nyerere International (DAR) is about 12 km southwest of Dar es Salaam. Kilimanjaro International (JRO) lies about 42 km from Moshi and 50 km from Arusha, and Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ) on Unguja is about 5 km south of Zanzibar City; ferries also link Stone Town with Dar es Salaam. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line. A local SIM, by contrast, needs registering with your passport, visa and fingerprints.

Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar

The Serengeti borders Kenya, where it continues as the Maasai Mara. A safari guide site calls connectivity there hit-and-miss: major lodges have Wi-Fi in their central areas, and very remote tented camps little or none. We cannot confirm coverage on Kilimanjaro on our network, so plan the climb as offline. Airtel announced in December 2025 that it had extended its 4G and 5G network to the Zanzibar islands.

Tip: mobile money such as M-Pesa needs a registered local number, which a travel eSIM does not give you, so carry a card and some cash; more in our Tanzania eSIM guide. Continuing into Kenya? Check whether your plan covers it, or add a Kenya plan.

Tanzania eSIM FAQ

Which network will my Tanzania eSIM use?
GB plans run on Airtel and unlimited plans on Airtel. Each plan card names its network and whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available. A plan card that says Celtel or Zain means Airtel: those are its former names in Tanzania. Vodacom, Yas (formerly Tigo), Halotel and TTCL are not on our plans. Check compatibility →
Will I have signal on safari in the Serengeti?
Only in places. A safari guide site describes connectivity in the Serengeti as hit-and-miss and cell coverage at very remote tented camps as intermittent, while major hotels and lodges have Wi-Fi or a connection in their central areas. Download offline maps and bookings before game drives, and ask your lodge which network works there. Install guide → · QR code not working? 9 fixes
Does my Tanzania eSIM work on Zanzibar?
It should, if your plan card lists Airtel, Celtel or Zain: Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, and Airtel announced in December 2025 that it had extended its 4G and 5G network to the Zanzibar islands. We cannot confirm coverage on every beach, so download offline maps for day trips.
Is the unlimited Tanzania plan really unlimited?
Yes. Our unlimited Tanzania plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit; you only choose the number of days. They are data only, with no calls, SMS or local number, and run on Airtel. If you mainly use maps and messaging, a GB plan may be enough; Tanzania plans start from $5.49.
Will my phone work with a Tanzania eSIM?
Most phones from 2018+ support eSIM (iPhone XS+, Pixel 3+, Galaxy S20+) and must be carrier-unlocked. Check our compatibility page before buying.
How do I get my Tanzania eSIM?
Instantly. After payment a QR code appears on screen and is emailed to you. Scan it in your phone settings — you can install before you fly.
When does the plan start in Tanzania?
Validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a network in Tanzania, so you can install it in advance and it won't start counting until you arrive.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. Your home SIM stays active for calls and texts; the Tanzania eSIM is used only for data.
Does it support hotspot / tethering?
It depends on the plan and the local network: many plans allow it, but some local operators limit or block tethering, so we can't guarantee it on every plan. If you need hotspot, message support before you buy and we'll check your destination.
Which mobile networks does the Tanzania eSIM use?
Plans connect to Airtel (5G). Your phone picks an available network automatically; 4G/5G depends on local coverage.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Tanzania?
Yes. Unlimited plans for Tanzania have no data cap and no fair-usage limit: you only choose the number of days (1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30), from $17.49. They are in the “Unlimited” tab above.
