Staying connected in Togo

The simplest way to get online in Togo is to install a travel eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land in Lomé. AirOva sells Togo plans from $28.49. Which Togo plan to choose

Moov Africa and Togocom

Moov Togo belongs to the Maroc Telecom group, which in January 2021 rebranded all its African subsidiaries, Moov Togo among them, as Moov Africa. Togocom, the country's other large operator, traces back to the state telecoms office founded in 1964, became Togo Telecom in 1997 and took the Togocom name in 2017; it is not on our plans.

Arriving in Lomé

Lomé's airport is officially Gnassingbé Eyadéma International (LFW), also known as Lomé–Tokoin International. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the data is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Keep roaming off on your home SIM.

Travelling on to Ghana, Benin or Burkina Faso

Togo is long and narrow: it stretches north from the Gulf of Guinea to Burkina Faso and is less than 115 km wide between Ghana and Benin, so a coastal trip can cross several borders. A Togo plan covers Togo only unless its card says otherwise; buy a plan for the next country in advance and install it over Wi-Fi in Lomé.

Tip: download offline maps before you head north, and send large uploads over hotel Wi-Fi to make a GB plan last. Keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its roaming off.
