Staying connected in Tonga

The simplest way to get online in Tonga is to install a travel eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land on Tongatapu. AirOva sells Tonga plans from $4.49, each with a fixed amount of data, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local number. Tonga plans run on Digicel; each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G.

Which Tonga plan to choose

For Tonga we sell GB plans only, with no unlimited option, so pick the data size to match your trip. Messaging, maps and booking apps take little data, while video calls and photo uploads take much more. Not sure? See how much data you need, and save large uploads for hotel Wi-Fi.

Digicel and U-Call

Tonga has two mobile operators: Digicel Tonga and U-Call, the brand of the incumbent Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC). Our plans use Digicel, not U-Call, and you call home over WhatsApp, FaceTime or other apps, since the plans have no local number.

Arriving on Tongatapu

Fua'amotu International (TBU) is on the south side of Tongatapu, about 20 km from the capital, Nuku'alofa. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the data is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Keep roaming off on your home SIM.

Vava'u, Ha'apai and the outer islands

Lulutai Airlines flies from Tongatapu to Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua. Vava'u International (VAV) is about 10 km north of Neiafu. Phone and internet service to Vava'u and Ha'apai runs over a domestic submarine cable: when it broke on 29 June 2024, operators fell back on satellite capacity and speeds dropped at peak times. For the smaller outer islands we found no reliable coverage map, so plan for gaps there.

Tip: download offline maps, ferry and flight bookings and your accommodation details while you are on Tongatapu. Carry a power bank for boat days, and keep your home SIM in for bank codes with its roaming off.
