Staying connected in the United Kingdom

The simplest way to get online in the UK is to install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land at Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), Manchester (MAN) or Edinburgh (EDI). Coverage: London, the Tube and the Highlands

London is densely covered, with 5G across much of the centre, and Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, York, Edinburgh and Glasgow are well covered. The Elizabeth line has coverage throughout; on the rest of the Underground, 4G and 5G are arriving station by station, so expect gaps between stations on deeper lines. Signal gets patchy in the Scottish Highlands and along the NC500, on Skye beyond Portree and in the Outer Hebrides, in the Lake District and Eryri (Snowdonia) valleys, and on Dartmoor and Exmoor. Rural branch lines and ferries can go offline for long stretches.

Arriving at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester or Edinburgh

After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Apps and UK specifics worth knowing

In London, tap a contactless card or phone on the Tube, buses and the Elizabeth line: tapping needs no data, and fares are capped daily if you use the same card or device. TfL Go or Citymapper give live times and disruption alerts, rail apps put e-tickets on your phone, and Uber and Bolt run in London and many other cities. One more UK tip: Britain is well covered where you will spend most of your time and surprisingly thin in the places people travel for. If Scotland, Wales or the national parks are on the itinerary, download offline maps and walking routes first; the sat-nav will lose signal. Keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes, with its data roaming off, and you'll leave Heathrow or Gatwick already checking your train.
